The Land of Limitless Possibilities
Thirty five years ago, there were celebrations across Akwa Ibom state. In every corner of the new state, there were jubilation, excitement and happiness.
The struggle for the creation of a new state from the former Cross Rivers State describe in clear term the word Limitless Possibility; To some, it was impossible, unimaginable and hold no water but as time unfold, it became a dream comes true.
Historically, the story about the birth and creation of Akwa Ibom State will not be completed without giving some huge credit to the formation and formal Inauguration of the Ibibio Union in 1928. The Ibibio Union in 1948 later metamorphosed from being a Cultural association to a national institution, engaging itself in promoting the cause of state creation in Nigeria.
Efforts aimed at bringing to stay the hallowed state, Akwa Ibom State, didn’t come as a piece meal, rather, it unfold some challenges that posed doubt and disbelief to some individuals, groups and parastatals.
The General Yakubu Gowon Administration brought about a close success, when the South-Eastern State was created in 1967.The present day Akwa Ibom, formed a part of the South-Eastern State. In line with the vision of the Ibibio Union, a memorandum demanding the creation of a state known and called Akwa Ibom State today, was drafted and submitted to the then military administration of General Buhari by the Paramount Rulers of six local government areas of the then “Mainland” part (now Akwa Ibom State)of Cross Rivers State. This memorandum for the creation of Akwa Ibom State was re-submitted in 1986 when the Political Bureau was set up by the Federal Military Government.
And in 23rd September 1987, after the struggle might have lasted for some years
, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, seconds and other time measuring
factors, Akwa Ibom State was created. Here mark a strong keynote in the first
Limitless Possibility of the state, Akwa Ibom State aka, The Land of Promise.
This first impossible Possibility echoes a marching song in my primary school days, which goes: “23rd September, 1987, Akwa Ibom State was born”.
As it is often said “There’s no Limit to what a man can achieve”, as Brian Tracy put it “The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent explored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channeled towards some great good”.
Truly, the potential of the Mainland part of Cross Rivers State now, Akwa Ibom State was so huge and is still so huge.
From the birth, till the now; there is no limit to what Akwa Ibom State can achieve. The Journey of the Limitless Possibilities started with state creation and the pages are numbering with great achievement in Agriculture, Education, Power supply, World class, Infrastructural development, Health care, good leaders, rich cultural heritage. Truly the birth of Akwa Ibom “Ake do eti emana”.
The young Akwa Ibom State, like the proverbial mustard seed since 1987 till date has bloomed in the path of achievements. At her relatively young age, the whole world have seen and attest to the great Leaders the state have had and is having.
From the military rule to the civilian, Akwa Ibom State has always been blessed with great leaders. Shortly After the state creation , It was Tunde Ogbeha, followed by Godwin Abbe, Idongesit Nkanga, Akpan Isemin, Yakubu Bako, Joseph Adeusi, John Ebiye, Victor Attah, Godswill Akpabio and UDOM EMMANUEL.
As a state full with multi-talented people, whose moral standing is at its peak, the state in Recent times have had great philosophies and unique slogans that keep hope alive on the Limitless Possibilities of achievement.
The Godswill Akpabio “Akwa Ibom Ado okay” was one of the philosophies that called on all sons and daughters of the states who were exploring other nearby states to come back home and share in the ever-rich status of the state. This era of the “Ado okay” philosophy was witnessed by massive Infrastructural development. The milestones of this era were measured by the completion of International airport, which was brought to stay by the previous era being the era of Obong Victor Attah. The eradication of illiteracy by the introduction of free and compulsory education up to senior secondary three (ss3), building of E-Library, construction of numerous over head bridges (fly-overs,) Roads, Hospitals, bridges and of course the building of the nest of Champion (The International Stadium).etc.
It was a remarkable era that made the former senate president of Nigeria, Senator Ken Nnamani during one of his visits to the state to say ‘what is essential is not the amount of money you get from the treasury but the vision and power of mind to appropriate such money sensibly. It is important that other states see Akwa Ibom State as a role model’
Rapidly, as the State is growing, the new era, the era of Dakkada philosophy came in to re-echoes to Akwa ibomite of the limitless possibilities of the state, the great potential yet to explore and the abundant resources yet to harness.
These and many more are all envision in the dakkada philosophy. Making all true sons and daughters of the state to be true ambassadors of hard work, dedication to service, commitment, and honesty and of course have a shared belief of a greater Akwa Ibom.
The “Rise to the faith that with God all things are possible” is not unconnected to the boundless and unlimited achievements our great state can achieve. Yes it is possible…
At the age of 35, the massive achievement recorded so far has shown that for sure “all things are possible”.
As a state created by God out of greatness, Akwa Ibom has continued to live beyond biases, ethnicity, religious sentiment, and gender. These are seen in the area of the peaceful coexistence of the diverse tribes and religious groups that are in the state. (Though Christianity is of greater percentage, other religion like Islam, and African Traditional Religion are also in the state.)
More to say, the “rise to the faith of our resources, beyond what others see; human and intellectual” is not also unconnected to the rich natural resources and the rich talented individuals embedded and/or seen in the state which are yet to be harnessed and/or uncovered.
The Dakkada philosophy came as a prophetic declaration to the state and usher in the era of industrialization. It makes the state to maximize her Potential and provides practical insight, skill sets and concrete strategies to help maximize more resources and human potential. In recent years, the state, Akwa Ibom has undergone rapid changes which brought about a new hope despite the recent harsh economic realities in the country.
It is true that Akwa Ibom is our only state, lets us join hand to build our dear state. HAPPY 35th independence anniversary.
